The most common format for video compression is MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group), with MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 being the typical implementations. MPEG-2 is used for satellite television and DVDs. MPEG-4 is used for home videos. Microsoft has produced a format called Windows Media Video (WMV) that was originally based, in part, on some of the same principles as MPEG-4. Over time, some improvements were made and submitted for standardization. As of 2006, WMV version 9 is an approved standard and is no longer considered proprietary.
