Successfully creating the updating subscription As I mentioned at the beginning of the chapter, you can update subscriptions in transactional replication using either transactional publication with updatable subscriptions or peerto-peer replication. You have now seen how to configure updating subscriptions. Remember that you can only use this configuration for publications with updatable subscriptions. The two types of updatable subscriptions have already been discussed in this section. In the Updatable Subscriptions page of the New Subscription Wizard (shown previously in Figure 8-29), you saw that both modes for updatable subscriptions are enabled. If you select the option Simultaneously commit changes from the Commit at Publisher drop-down list, and the publication allows queued updating subscriptions (in this case, the publication does), then the update_mode subscription property will be set to failover so that you can switch to the queued updating subscription mode. The update_mode property can have the following values when you add a subscription: read-only, failover, sync tran, queued tran, and queued failover.

Clients can submit a query that requests to be notified when data is modified in a manner that would change the query result, and the database server sends a notification when such changes occur. This notification is sent through a Service Broker message to the subscriber. These requests are called query notification subscriptions. You can find the list of notification subscriptions in the sys.dm_qn_subscriptions server-level view. Table 9-2 describes the available columns of this catalog view. Although you must take a number of actions to allow SQL Server to provide this service to .NET clients, the key is that queries sent to SQL Server have a flag attached to them telling SQL Server that in addition to returning the result set, SQL Server should register the query (and its subscriber) into query notifications. It does this by using a queue that is aware of the query and a Service Broker service that is attached to the queue and knows how to get back to the client (through the routing configuration). If any of the rows in that result set get updated in the database, the item in the related queue is triggered and in turn, sends a Service Broker message to its service and then sends a notice back to the application that initiated the request.

In this section, I will show you how to switch from immediate updating to queued updating, or vice versa, for a pull subscription. For pull subscriptions, right-click the pull subscription that is enabled for updatable subscriptions, mysales_remoteupdate_tran3 in this case, and select Properties. In order to change from immediate updating to queued updating, under the Subscription options change Immediately replicate changes to Queue changes, as shown in Figure 8-35.
